Story Title: The Measure of a Man

Author name: M N Thies

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean

The Setup: Set after Curse of the Black Pearl, Will wants to marry Elizabeth, but the Governor is being completely OOC and is forbidding it. Liz still thinks that Daddy is wonderful, and Will is reduced to be a pitiful, wailing wimp. These exerpts take place after a ball is destroyed by pirates blowing up the ballroom. Governor is stuck inside burning building. Will is being Brave and goes to rescue him.

Sample Passage:
The words had hurt him badly, crushing his already beaten pride, stabbing into his heart and tearing it like a barbed knife. But he wouldn't let Swann see that. He wouldn't!

For a brief moment he saw Elizabeth. He saw her smiling, her eyes shining, her skin soft beneath his hands. He heard her voice, like the sweetest song caressing his spirit. He tasted her lips, felt the silky strands of her hair slip and curl about her fingers, breathed her intoxicating scent. He knew her so well, every curve of her body, every of her voice, every twist in her honey locks and fleck of gold in her glimmering eyes.

With a lingering, worried glance, Swann turned and ran towards the staircase. Will watched him for a moment, and the wourld seemed to slow. The Governor looked him in the eye, perhaps for the first time. (Liar) Nothing monumental came between them in that long moment. Apologies were not offered or requested. Acceptance was not reached. There was yet the rift between them, and neither made the effort to see it disappear. But it was a chance, a bit of understanding, a sad speck of hope that later, when fate had taken them to the end of this disastrous path, hearts would be opened and amendswould be made. It hurt, somehow. It hurt to realize that only on a night of such bloddy slaughter, that only such a sacrifice, could alter a skewed perception. A moral measure, based not on breeding or bounty, would be borne from this moment, and it was discouraging that only in the face of such destruction could a revolution occur. For the monster of social justice blood would be spilt.

I should proabaly also mention that Will is shot, stabbed and poisoned, all in the course of about two hours. OH, TEH AAAAAAANGST!!!

Heh, I read this one! It is worthy of reporting here indeed. I thought at the time, "My, there sure are a lot of words in this story." :p

See the way it starts:

A fine day had come to Port Royal. The sky was bright and blue, dotted haphazardly by puffs of cottony white, and the sun was warm and cheery in its reign over the land. The sea was calm, lapping at the shores and docks with the repetitive tickling of a lover. A cool breeze served to lessen the press of the midday heat, ruffling trees and flowers as it brushed by, weaving its way randomly through the town. It carried with it the scent of the ocean, that sort of lingering tang that eased the spirit and suggested to the heart that certain things remained constant in life when all else seemed to change whimsically. Warm days offered a sense of security that could often lure the soul to defy the senses and truly believe that men could be as calm or as invariable as the sea on a day such as this. That there was good in the world. That there was yet some mark of morality, some lasting fairness inherit in the workings of all things.

Re: Hi

It would be my pleasure. Check my journal, I'll put a chapter under an LJ cut.

I'm going to enjoy this...
